Shawnee Kansas Arts is proud to bring a new student‑designed sculpture, The Kansas Wildflower, to the roundabout at 75th Street and Monticello Road. Created by Mill Valley High School sophomore AK Wright, the piece celebrates native wildflowers found throughout Johnson County—plains coreopsis, American bellflower, bloodroot, and more.
This installation continues Shawnee’s growing tradition of student‑led public art. From Wright’s original concept to the welding and fabrication work by students at USD 232’s Cedar Trails Exploration Center, the entire project is a hands‑on learning experience in design, engineering, and civic engagement.
The Kansas Wildflower was selected from submissions by students at both Mill Valley and Shawnee Mission Northwest, who presented models and participated in interviews with an art selection committee comprised of community members. The result is a sculpture that reflects both youthful creativity and deep appreciation for the natural beauty of our region.
Although initial funding is in place—including a $5,000 grant from the Kansas Arts Commission—we are continuing to raise money to cover materials such as acrylic, metal, and fabrication supplies.
Donations of any amount make a meaningful difference. Every contribution helps local students gain real‑world experience and brings Shawnee one step closer to a vibrant new landmark.
This project is made possible in part by a grant from the Kansas Arts Commission, a state agency, along with generous community support.
